SPECIAL INTEREST:

Got Flood Insurance
Recent figures show that about 25% of all flood insurance claims came from people who did NOT live in areas previously considered at high risk.  Many Vermont homeowners and businesses who suffered damage were not insured against losses connected with flooding.  Either they thought they didn't need flood insurance, or they didn't realize they weren't covered.

Insurance Division

Michael S. Bertrand, Deputy Commissioner
Main: 802-828-3301   Consumer Assistance: 1-800-964-1784

The Insurance Division governs the insurance industry and protects the public in these general areas:
Solvency laws require insurance companies to operate in a fiscally responsible manner
so that, after taking their customers' money (premiums), they can be counted on to pay claims down the road.
Consumer protection laws
require companies to sell legal insurance products (those that comply with Vermont consumer laws) at defensible costs, as well as treat consumers fairly.
In the State of Vermont, the separate Division of Health Care Administration has jurisdiction over most health insurance matters as well as health care quality assurance and consumer protection.  (See full description of Insurance Division's regulatory role.)
