Information on Flood Insurance
- Do I have flood insurance?
- Flood is not covered in a typical homeowners, renter’s or condominium policy. Flood Insurance is provided through a separate flood insurance policy and Contents coverage must be purchased separately.

- How do I file a flood insurance claim for my house or condominium?
- If you have property damage and have a flood insurance policy in force you should contact the insurance company or agent who wrote the policy. A policyholder must file a “proof of loss” within 60 days of the date of loss. If you have questions consult with your insurance representative or call the NFIP toll-free at 1-800-638-6620 or on the TDD line at 1-800-447-9487.
- How do I file a claim for my flood damaged auto?
- If you carry comprehensive coverage on your automobile policy you can file a claim directly through your agent or company. Contact information can be found on your Insurance ID card or on your declarations page.
- What do I do immediately after a flood if I have flood insurance?
- Contact your agent or company to report your loss. Separate your damaged property from your undamaged property and don’t throw anything away before the adjuster has seen it. Make a list of damaged contents. List all areas of Structural Damage that you want to be sure to point out to the adjuster.
- How will my claim be handled under my flood insurance policy?
- An adjuster should contact you within 24-48 hours after you report your loss. The adjuster will set a time to view your property. During the visit the adjuster will take measurements and photographs and let you know if additional visits will be required. The adjuster will provide a detailed estimate of damages and you will receive a copy to present to a contractor. You may ask for advance or partial payment if you have a covered loss.
- How do I appeal the settlement of my flood claim?
- Under FEMA’s guidelines you must take the following steps:
- Talk to the assigned adjuster about any concerns that you have.
- If you are not satisfied ask to speak with the adjuster’s supervisor.
- If the supervisor cannot resolve your issues contact the company’s claim representative.
- If you still have questions or concerns contact the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at: www.fema.gov
- How can I obtain flood insurance?
- You can contact any licensed insurance producer in your community. Locate an agent in your area: www.fema.gov/nfipInsurance/search.do Note: Your community needs to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program to be eligible to purchase flood insurance. To find out if your community participates go online to: www.fema.gov/fema/csb.shtm
